FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 30, 2012

“Tower Tour Day” at Terminal Canceled Due to Nesting Peregrine Falcons

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) has canceled the first of two scheduled “Tower Tour Days” that was to take place on Sunday, May 6th. The action is in response to a Department of Environmental Conservation inspection of the nesting box of the Terminal’s pair of “resident” peregrine falcons. During special “Tower Tour Days,” docents provide the public a rare look inside the Terminal’s office tower that includes viewing opportunities on the building’s 13th floor.

A nest box, constructed and installed by the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation in 2009, is currently home to two adult peregrines. Inspection confirmed that 2012 is the third consecutive year that eggs have been found in the nest. Due to the fierce territorial nature of the falcons, it was decided that the spring tower tour would be canceled to lessen the risk of stress experienced by the parents.

A second “Tower Tour Day” scheduled for later this year will take place on Sunday, October 7 2012. A complete listing of architectural and history tours may be found on the CTRC’s website, www.BuffaloCentralTerminal.org. Tours are an important part of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation’s mission to educate and excite the community about the ongoing restoration of the landmark.

Full refunds will be given to customers who made advanced reservations for Sunday’s tour. People are asked to call the Terminal at 716-810-3210 for processing. No other tours of the building are schedule for May 6th.

The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) was founded in 1997 to oversee the stabilization and restoration of the New York Central Terminal in Buffalo, New York. The Terminal complex includes an 18-acre site that hosts an art deco office tower, passenger concourse and four-story baggage building.
Iconic Flagpole Returned to Exterior of Buffalo Central Terminal

Ceremony Marks End of Successful Event Season at Landmark Building

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Missing for more than thirty years, a 50 foot flagpole has returned to Buffalo Central Terminal as a tribute to the thousands of military veterans who traveled through the building during times of peace and war. On Thursday, November 10th at 10 am, members of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation and AMVETS Post 897 will raise the American flag on another iconic element to return to the Polonia District landmark. Central Terminal is located at 495 Paderewski Drive @ Memorial Drive.

From the beginning of World War II, to the return of troops from the Vietnam Conflict, thousands of servicemen and women passed through Buffalo Central Terminal during their military careers. The idea of returning the flagpole to Buffalo Central Terminal began in 2008 when Chuck Marsillo, past commander of AMVETS Post 897, participated in a tour of the Terminal lead by Central Terminal Restoration Corporation President Mark Lewandowski. Lewandowski, a twenty year military veteran currently serving with the 107th Airlift Wing, worked with AMVETS representatives on the project that culminated in the recent reinstallation of the flagpole in its original location. Marsillo brought in donations from AMVETS members and other military members to purchase the flagpole.

Towering 50 feet above the eastern side of the Terminal, the new flagpole replaces one that was taken down by scrap dealers in the 1980s. The flagpole joins a recently replaced buffalo statue as decorative elements of Buffalo Central Terminal are returned as part of ongoing restoration efforts.

“On behalf of the veterans and their families who have passed through the main concourse of the Central Terminal, on their way to a journey where in most cases their lives were changed forever, we are proud to acknowledge this remembrance of sacrifice,” said Lewandowski. “For thousands of people, Buffalo Central Terminal was their final time in Buffalo.”

Four Peregrine Falcon Chicks Banded at Buffalo Central Terminal

Born in May; Chicks Given Names to Reflect Buffalo’s Historic Rich Railroad Legacy

BUFFALO, N.Y. – New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in cooperation with the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation, is pleased to announce that four Peregrine Falcons have hatched and are nesting at Buffalo’s historic Central Terminal building – another victory in the decades long effort to reintroduce this endangered species in the northeast.

The nest box, constructed and installed by the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation in 2009, is currently home to two adult Peregrines and four chicks that began hatching towards the end of May. DEC Biologists recently accessed the nest to band the falcon chicks (also known as eyases) and report that they are healthy and in good condition. It was discovered that there are two male and two female chicks.

Central Terminal Restoration Corporation officials were on-hand to creatively name the falcons, choosing identities that reflect Buffalo’s rich railroad history. The names include: “Commodore,” in honor of Commodore Vanderbilt, founder of the New York Central Railroad; “Phoebe Snow,” the famous passenger train of the Lackawanna Railroad which linked Buffalo and New York City; “Lehigh,” short for the Lehigh Valley Railroad whose terminal was once located on Main Street in downtown Buffalo and “Chessie,” in reference to the Chessie System, a railroad that serviced Buffalo in the 1970s.

Banding young Peregrine Falcons provides biologists with important information on the bird’s movements and survival, and is useful in understanding their year-round habitat needs. The banding process involves briefly removing the chicks from the nest when they are about three weeks old and gently placing a color coded metal band around one of their legs and an U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service band on the opposite leg. These bands are uniquely lettered and numbered so that the birds can be identified and data can be collected on their movements, population, feeding habits and survival. After banding, the birds are immediately returned to their nest and the care of their parent birds.

The idea of placing a nesting box at Central Terminal took shape two years ago when DEC biologists and local birdwatchers observed peregrine falcons frequenting areas around the building. When DEC asked the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation to consider hosting a nest box, they were quick to cooperate.

The nest box, located about 120 feet above the ground near the top of Central Terminal, was selected as a nesting location by the two adult falcons in 2010. DEC Biologists report that both of the parent birds are un-banded, indicating that their origin and exact age is unknown.

In 2011 the CTRC released its master plan that outlined various infrastructure needs and development opportunities.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 1, 2011
MEDIA ADVISORY
WHAT: Peregrine Falcon Chick Banding
WHO: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) & The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation.
WHEN: Thursday, June 2nd, 3:00 p.m.
WHERE: Buffalo Central Terminal, 495 Paderewski Drive @ Memorial Drive, Buffalo, NY 14212

NOTE: The DEC will conclude a day of peregrine falcon census taking and banding with the banding of newly hatched chicks who reside at Buffalo Central Terminal. A nest box, constructed and installed by the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation in 2009 is currently home to two adult Peregrines and a number to be determined chicks. On Thursday the DEC Biologists will accessed the nest to band the falcon chicks (also known as eyases) and report on their condition.

Banding young Peregrine Falcons provides biologists with important information on the birds movements and survival, and is useful in understanding their year-round habitat needs. The banding process involves briefly removing the chicks from the nest when they are about three weeks old and gently placing a color coded metal band around one of their legs and an aluminum U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service band on the opposite leg. These bands are uniquely lettered and numbered so that the birds can be identified and data can be collected on their movements, population, feeding habits and survival. After banding, the birds are immediately returned to their nest and the care of their parent birds.

The idea of placing a nesting box at Central Terminal took shape when DEC biologists and local birdwatchers observed peregrine falcons frequenting areas around the building. When DEC asked the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation to consider hosting a nest box, they were quick to cooperate.

The nest box, located about 120 feet above the ground near the top of Central Terminal, was selected as a nesting location by the two adult falcons in 2010. The Buffalo Niagara Area hosts the largest urban Peregrine Falcon population in upstate New York.

Over the years, this community volunteer day has positively transformed the Terminal’s concourse and grounds making it a point of pride in the community and allowing for the Terminal to be used for events that generated much needed funds to secure the building.

“Volunteers are asked to come ready to work with gloves, work attire, sturdy footwear and tools,” said Yuri Hreschyshyn, CTRC Board Member and clean up coordinator. “These clean-up days have had a profound effect on the complex. The founding of this event over a decade ago started the community’s grassroots interest in saving the Terminal. 2011 is an important year for us as we prepare the building for events that will take place during the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s national conference.”

Volunteers check-in will take place on the main approach to the Terminal beginning at 8:45a. All volunteers will receive a light lunch following the work session and may participate in a brief tour of the building.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 10, 2011

BUFFALO CENTRAL TERMINAL MASTER PLAN RELEASE TO STAKEHOLDERS

Outline for Preservation, Restoration and Reuse of Art Deco Landmark

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Under the vaulted ceiling of the passenger concourse, business leaders, political delegates, members of Western New York’s preservation community and dedicated volunteers gathered for the public release of Buffalo Central Terminal master plan. The public debut of this much anticipated document will act as a guide for the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of one of Buffalo’s most significant landmarks.

The comprehensive plan was prepared by the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation’s (CTRC) Architectural Advisory Committee headed by CTRC Board Member and architectural designer Paul Lang. It outlines various infrastructure needs and development opportunities with the goal of returning Buffalo Central Terminal to its full architectural integrity and regional significance. The plan calls for developing the complex in manageable phases, with each able to stand alone. Primary elements of the plan include:

· Development of the iconic office tower for residential space. Units could range from large work/live spaces on the lower floors and medium-sized loft-style units on the middle floors, to large penthouse suites on the upper floors. Affordable housing also would be considered.

· Use of a four story baggage building on Curtis Street as a green business incubator facility to accommodate small business and light industrial operations.

· Full architectural restoration of the main passenger concourse to be used as publicly accessible space for museum exhibitions, art shows, festivals, rentals and other community purposes.

· Reuse of existing rail lines and intended public transportation space for expanded bus service, light rail expansion to the airport and incorporation into New York State’s plans for a high-speed rail system.

· Creation of an Urban Habit Classroom on parklands that parallel Memorial Drive. This project will demonstrate green development principles and transform former parking lots into neighborhood enhancing gardens.

The plan identifies numerous local, state and federal tax credits and other economic incentives aimed at lowering the cost of development.

“Not many cities have a treasure like Central Terminal, and I want to make sure Buffalo can take advantage of it,” said Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Fairport. “The terminal should be preserved, not only for its beauty, but also for its historical significance.”

Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes, D-Buffalo, has offered support for the project, especially inclusion in the State’s plans for high-speed rail.

“What they’re trying to do is a game winner for that neighborhood. I’d like to see the grandeur of the Central Terminal in use in my lifetime,” she said.

The cost to complete all phases of this multi part plan is estimated at $75 million. A mix of private, public and foundation monies are being sought to complete the project. The amount of initial funding requested will be dependent upon which elements of the plan will be embarked upon within the next 14-months. A recent study found that the 17-story brick and masonry tower building needs $2.6 million in work, largely masonry repointing and stabilization, with another study of the concourse expected to show a cost of more than $1 million to replace its roof.

A downloadable version of the master plan document is available on the Terminal’s website www.BuffaloCentralTerminal.org. Hard copies will be on sale at the Terminal Store during all public events at the building.

The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation was founded in 1997 to oversee the stabilization and restoration of the New York Central Terminal in Buffalo, New York. The Terminal complex includes an 18-acre site that hosts an art deco office tower, passenger concourse and four-story baggage building.
Buffalo Oktoberfest to Celebrate 200th Anniversary of German Festival

Thousands expected for 8th Annual Ump-Pa-Pa Party at Buffalo Central Terminal

BUFFALO, N.Y. – According to our calendars it’s September, but for the thousands of people who will soon make their way to Buffalo Central Terminal, its Oktoberfest! The Munich-style Buffalo Oktoberfest is scheduled for Saturday, September 25th from 5:30pm to 11pm and takes place inside the Terminal’s historic passenger concourse located at 495 Paderewski Drive @ Memorial Drive.

The Buffalo Oktoberfest is Western New York’s largest event of its kind drawing over 4,000 people to eat, drink, dance, experience German heritage and share in the spirit of gemutlichkeit*.

The original Oktoberfest was first held in Munich, Germany in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig. It has since evolved into a multi-day festival running from late September to early October. The Buffalo Oktoberfest on September 25th will pay homage to the 200th anniversary of Oktoberfest by basing its event on traditions found inside actual Oktoberfest beer tents found in Munich.

“There is no better building in Buffalo to transform into a giant Munich biergarten than the Terminal,” explains Central Terminal Restoration Corporation Event Coordinator Ryan Willard. “Every attempt is being made to create an authentic Oktoberfest experience. From German food and beer to a spirited um pa, pa band and dancing, nothing is quite like the Buffalo Oktoberfest.”

The Buffalo Oktoberfest will feature German brewed Spaten Lager and Warsteiner Oktoberfest beers as well as locally brewed limited edition Oktoberfest styles from Pearl Street Brewing Company and Flying Bison Brewing. Peter Mertes wines, produced by a family-owned winery located on the Mosel River in Germany, will be featured. German delicacies will include various styles of sausage including bratwurst and mettwurst. Buffalo’s German show band, The Frankfurters, will be leading the entertainment and raising a glass to the traditional toast of “Prost” throughout the night.

According to event organizers, the goals of Oktoberfest are to educate the community on German culture as well as raise money for Buffalo Central Terminal. Admission is $10 for adults with half-priced admission for those with a valid college ID. Party goers wearing the traditional German costumes of the “dirndl” for women and “lederhosen” or “bundhosen” for men with receive free admission. All proceeds from the event benefit the stabilization and restoration of the Terminal.

The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) was founded in 1997 to oversee the stabilization and restoration of the 1929 New York Central Terminal in Buffalo, New York. The Terminal complex includes an 18-acre site that hosts an art deco office tower, passenger concourse and four story baggage building. The mission of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation is to ensure that the original grandeur of the Terminal is available to current and to all future generations. Information about the building’s colorful history and schedule of special events is available at BuffaloCentralTerminal.org.

* Loosely translated Gemutlichkeit represents a good, cheerful feeling. The kind of feeling you have when spending an evening with friends at the village beer garden. These are unhurried and leisure moments to be cherished.
