Can’t attend, but shouldn’t Habitat for Humanity be part of this? The vacant homes/properties on the streets directly adjacent to the Broadway Market project a very sad image. Rehabbing them or, regrettably, demolishing some of them would seem to be a high priority to make the Market a more attractive destination.
I’d ask the Market to strongly consider putting an international beer garden (no hard liquor, just beer and wine) in there. The only places in Buffalo to sample many beers from Eastern Europe is in private clubs. It would give a choice of diversions, shopping or relaxing, to folks with differing priorities. A guy could do a good deed and take an elderly relative to the Market for shopping and he could savor a couple of beers that would be hard to find elsewhere. In doing so, he may also become a market shopper, picking up his meats for his BBQ’s and returning to the beer garden to enjoy other beverages. Keep the libation selection internationally exotic (Asia, African, Caribbean, European), somewhat pricey and keep the tv out so you don’t impact the neighborhood bars too much. If a guy wants a shot and a cheap draft whiles he watches the game or just wants to get hammered, this WOULDN’T be that place. A retail outlet for these beverages might be part of the mix. I know the Markets in Hamilton, Toronto, and Philly don’t have these and there may be good reasons for not doing so, liability insurance for one, but the Broadway Market has to do something to build traffic and make it more of a destination.
Consider reviving Wingstock and holding at the Terminal. It was the beloved LOCAL wing festival that used to be held on the pedestrian mall downtown until the National Wingfest eclipsed it. There’s certainly enough appetite for more than one wing event. I have a contact who knows the person holding the rights to Wingstock name.
I think a Ribfest would be great at the Terminal as well. Or a barbeque “seminar” put on by some of our local rib / BBQ experts could be a fun event too.
Bringing different folks into the area with different reasons for being there will create a tide that lifts all boats. Yeah, I know, cliche.:)
