The Cafe Deco group must have bought a whole group of our lamps at one time. Besides the one 7 footer and 3 smaller lamps in Hong Kong, here are another 4 7 footers and 2 small lamps in their new Cafe Deco venture in Macau:

Pingback: More original Central Terminal lamps located | Broadway Fillmore Alive
Looking at these lamps is there not a single craftsman in Buffalo/WNY that would like to build these for the Central Terminal.
Can’t we get a fund together for lighting that people can donate at events so we can get them duplicated.
We know where they are…we can get pictures, details and measurements.
Why I bet there is a Buffalonian that would donate funds to duplicate an entire large lighting fixture.
Hey thinking small…if we even got one duplicated per year that would still be an awesome addition to our wonderful Central Terminal along with the Clock and the Buffalo.
Better start thinking about it…Senator Clinton is making federal funds available for mass transit and the NFTA is committed to rehiring their consulting firm for a new study to extend the light rail with the Airport Corridor (thru the Central Terminal) as their #1 priority.
You couldnt get to much better than to have a reactivated Beltway thru the Central Terminal and an airport corridor thru the Central Terminal with a newly paved parking lot perfect for a ParknRide.
Put the word out to Buffalo Craftsman….there is someone out there chomping at the bit to have their name and reputation on those duplicated lighting fixtures. You just cant buy advertising like that….
If I remember correctly, in a long previous post on this site, a small group of people from the CTRC, along with former president Field went to the Cafe Deco in Hong Kong and was given permission to take measurements of the Central Terminal fixtures on display there. Photos I believe are posted in the photo gallery.
I don’t know if prints or drawings were made up from the photos and measurements yet, or if the inner workings of the fixtures were documented either, but once drawings can be made available, I’m sure ROHS compliant (or maybe not) replicas of these fixtures could be produced economically locally. If somebody comes up with a plan, and the replica fixtures perfectly detail the originals, maybe a swap could be arranged. The Cafe Deco group could get the replicas in exchange for the return of the originals to Buffalo. If not, the replicas would be fine in the terminal, although not original.
(I guess in Hong Kong they made a giant replica of a floor light, photo in gallery.)
That’s just another pie-in-the-sky idea to play around with. Maybe a group of students somewhere could pick up that ball and run with it. They could probably get involved in making up the drawings as well as building replicas of some of the light fixtures too.
Just like maybe making another bison to replace our smashed one. Maybe with UB’s permission, another master mold could be crafted out of wax (in sections) from their bronze statue so the BCT bison can be re-created, since it supposedly is an identical twin, made from an exact duplicate mold, which seems to have completely vanished from existence. The likeness could be of whatever material is not too expensive, plaster (again), recycled plastic composition, etc..
It would be a very noble gesture on the part of UB to allow their bronze bison statue to be cloned, to give something back to BCT, since BCT originally gave the likeness of its bison statue, now gone, to UB.
Man Paul G, you have alot of cool ideas. I just wish that we can get the same measurements of these lamps and make exact replicas. If only there was some guy in WNY that is an awesome craftsmen and could make these up. I think it would make the concourse stand out more. Also does anyone else know where we can find more BCT artifacts other than the places in Hong Kong? I would really like to see more artifacts brought back in the building. It also makes you wonder it there is any artifacts floating around the WNY area.
Well, Ozzy, if the CTRC has a contact or contacts with the Cafe Deco group that now owns these light fixtures, like a maintenance person, etc., we might want to start communication with those individuals to find out if they will work with us on providing us with details of the fixtures they now own. Maybe they can fax or email exact measurements, digital megapixel photographs, etc..
Once the mechanical and electrical drawings for the fixtures are made up, and some prototype replicas are built, maybe we can interest them (Cafe Deco group) in buying more replica fixtures from us, if we find an ambitious party to build them, and they agree to let proceeds from the sales be donated to the CTRC for the terminal’s restoration effort.
From the photos I have seen, it appears that our original fixtures are being well taken care of in the hands of the Cafe Deco group. I think if we approach them the right way, the maintenance people who clean and service the fixtures, and prepared them for installation would probably work with us.
(If we know who has the chandeliers that once hung in the east and west concourse, I wonder if they too would work with us providing dimensions, measurements, recent megapixel color photos, etc., so drawings could be made of those too, and eventually replicas of those built.)
Who knows, once we have the drawings made, maybe some of us could build smaller, scaled-down versions of these fixtures for home decorative lighting too.
(At least for our own homes.) I would be interested!
As far as some awesome guy in WNY, there is a lot of talent displayed each year by local artists at Allentown, and its Rochester counterpart, Corn Hill, and many places in between, which could be tapped. Also there are disabled veteran’s groups and other groups of people with special needs, etc. in the area, that are very talented, and would be happy to help out, if somebody asked them.
I also heard that some of the lights are in the Macys building in New York City. I think they are in the mens department. If only we can find some photos of those lights in the Macys building and see the light fixtures they have.
Maybe we can contact someone at Macy’s through a link on their website or by phone to get more information, photos, etc.. Maybe someone, like a store manager at a local Macy’s store in one of the area malls can help us out with this. Let’s find out.
We’ve had members visit the Macy’s store before and were unable to locate any lights that were from the Terminal.
Could have been just a wild rumor, but as with any leads, I suppose we should, whenever practically possible, look into them. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don’t. It’s like detectives looking into a cold case for possible evidence that might have gotten missed along the way, before the case was closed.
It’s anybody’s guess how many hands the lights and other items that were removed from the terminal have gone through before they actually start to resurface somewhere. Who knows, maybe some will turn up at an estate auction some place, and others, if scrapped, are lost forever.
(I’m curious where the wooden benches and waiting room clocks went too.)
