Oktoberfest Updates

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

I’m happy to report that Oktoberfest was another great party this year! About 1,250 people showed up, danced, drank, ate and enjoyed the music of the Frankfurters. I’m also happy to report that there were far more people dressed in dirndls and lederhosen than in the past 2 years. Everyone looked great!

Erie 1 BOCES Awarded National Grant for Central Train Terminal Project

SkillsUSA and Lowe’s announced that three Erie 1 BOCES career and technical centers were awarded a grant of $10,000 by the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) towards a community service project that will benefit the Buffalo Central Train Terminal.

The students of Harkness, Kenton and Potter career centers will gain real world experience as part of the grant. Under the supervision of their teachers the students will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects that may include restroom restoration, designing murals and additional projects utilizing building trade skills.

Bob Mroz, SkillsUSA advisor and teacher at the Potter Career and Technical Center leading the course of the project said, “This community service project is a great way to get students involved and gain hands-on experience outside of the classroom.”

Erie 1 BOCES has a meeting slated with the Buffalo Central Terminal Restoration Corporation. Details on the projects most critical to the building will be identified and added to the project list. The team will also be working with local Lowe’s stores to complete the grant funded project that will begin in September.

Train Show Recap

Monday, September 10th, 2007

The 2nd Annual Model Train Show this past weekend was a HUGE success!! The Terminal was busy both days with the total attendance for the Show hitting the 5,550 level. Everyone had a great time, there were a lot of folks coming to the Terminal for the first time.

The Merchandise Booth saw record sales in a single day on Saturday and we had more train layouts as a result of Niagara Hobby help out with funding and sponsorship advertising.

I would like to recognize all the volunteers that made this event a success. With all the things that need to happen behind the scenes at events like this, they so often efforts go unrecognized. Thanks to Beverly Mruk performed her usual magic to help this event come together. Thanks to all the volunteers that stayed past their assigned shift times to keep the event moving along.

I would like to especially thank ALL the people on the Building Committee for providing a usable building, with a lot more table rental area then last year. There were times where some of the space required for the Show to happen was in question, the efforts of the all the building committee volunteers came through.

Thanks to All !!
